Thou art the Christ

Mark 8:29

This Confession of Peter is concisely described by Alsan Santos:
"The first half of Mark’s gospel reaches a decisive climax as Peter confesses that Jesus is the Messiah. The Markan narrative now takes a decisive turn, as Jesus defines his messianic role as one of suffering and sacrifice."
Thus, the Gospel of Mark can be broken into two parts, one before the Confession of Peter and one after. Mark L. Strauss of the Bible Project describes the parts this way:
  • The Identity of Jesus: Mighty Messiah & Son of God (Mark 1:1-8:30)
  • The Mission of Jesus: The Suffering Servant of the Lord (8:31-16:8)
