temptation

James 1:12

In my Bible Study class on Sept. 4, 2024, my pastor asked the class, "How would you define temptation?"

Interestingly, I found a very good definition on Wikipedia of all places, quoting a now-removed article from the St. Thomas SyroMalabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago:

"The Biblical meaning of temptation is 'a trial in which man has a free choice of being faithful or unfaithful to God'."
That satisfies the definition, but the remainder of the quote in context is:
"Satan encouraged Jesus to deviate from the plan of his father by misusing his authority and privileges. Jesus used the Holy Scripture to resist all such temptation. When we are tempted, the solution is to be sought in the Bible."
Satan's temptation of Jesus is recorded in Matthew 4:1-11 (and parallel passages in Mark and Luke).
