surety, smart, suretiship, sure

Proverbs 11:15

In finance, a surety, surety bond or guaranty involves a promise by one party to assume responsibility for the debt obligation of a borrower if that borrower defaults.

"Smart" here is the verb form: to feel or cause a sharp stinging pain.

Suretiship: The office of a surety or bondsman; the act of being bound for another.

"Sure" here is obsolete usage, meaning secure or safe.

COMPARE 11P15 in the NLT: "There's danger in putting up security for a stranger's debt; it's safer not to guarantee another person's debt."
